Gold Cup Round 2 2008: Reddick

written by Kaelyn Sheedy

With seventy percent chance of rain on Sunday morning, the forecast for a dry weekend was not in our favor. Although the rain held off on Sunday, showers had moved through Saturday night and first practice on race day was, to say the least, a complete mud fest. Thanks to the great track workers, however, the top layer of slushy mud was pushed off the track and for the first few motos the track was fairly slick. Despite adversity from Mother Nature, Reddick provided yet another great weekend of racing.

Coming out strong all weekend was the #271 of Malcom Stewart. Taking the overalls in three classes, the 250B, School Boy 14-16 and the Open B, there isn't much more to say, his six moto winning streak speaks for itself. In the 250 B class, Justin Starling and Robby Renner had a go at it both motos. The results were in Starling's favor for moto two, with his 2nd place moto one finish, Renner was going to have to dig deep and ride smart to snatch the second place overall. Renner did just that, fought hard that is, and after jumping out of the gate in second, the pressure was now on Starling's shoulders to work his way up from 4th. Starling utilized the rutted track conditions and found himself giving Renner a little taste of his front tire. The #12 capitalized on the 153's seldom mistake, allowing him to make the pass into second place.

In the Plus classes this weekend it was yet again Vince Devane and Earl May who were victorious. May was able to make winning the 40 Plus and Plus 30 class look easy while Devane was dominant in both the Plus 25 and Plus 35 classes. It looks as if we will continue to see these two competitors at the track each weekend, and you can bet this continuous game of tug of war will not be over anytime soon.

In the 85 (9-11) class Mason Price had to contend with a determined Dalton Myers who was looking to take both motos wins at Reddick this weekend. Props to Mason who found strength to pull through and finish second overall. Keep your eyes on these two Florida locals.

The Jr Mini 85 (9-13) class had an interesting turn of events. Dalton Myers headed into moto two with a DNS, unsure as to why, but regardless, it gave Clifford Sanders confidence heading in after having won the first moto. Myers pulled through and won the second moto. The winner for this class was neither of the moto winners. Austin Collins out of Oviedo, FL stayed consistent and you've all heard it before, consistency pays off.

Jett Johnson
and Cody Chisholm took turns taking a moto win in both the the (12-13) 85 and Super Mini (12-16) classes. It would be the 737 of Johnson who would finish 1-2 in both scenarios and would take home both overalls. Believe it or not, racing stayed fairly tight all through out the motos and hunting down the guy in first was a toss up between the top five runners. These 85 classes have so far proved to put forth some of the best battles of the series.

Second place finisher at Loretta Lynn's this year was the #43 of Cullin Park. Home to Clearmont, FL, we saw this little guy rip around the track in the 50 (4-6) Class for another perfect weekend. Having put his cobra out front all three motos last week at Gatorback he again went uncontested at Reddick.

JordanBailey_0069.jpg
The bright orange KTM of Joshua Gibbs gave Jordan Bailey a run for his money in moto one of the 50 (7-8) Stock class. A DNS for Gibbs would leave the #133 of Bailey to lead strong in the second moto. Bailey took the overall in this class, as well as the 50 Open class. Cody Holdeman and Cullin Park were also heavy hitters in the Open class.

Josh Talmadge hit it off in the 250 Open and Open (No A) classes. He was able to hold off the hard charge of Nick Myers in the 250 Open class, although they both put on quite the show.  Talmadge let the second moto win in the Open (No A) slip away to Bo Partin, but he was still able to clench the overall with a solid first moto score.

#51 would prove to be superior this weekend in the 65 classes. His 4 moto victories in the 65 Open and 65 (10-11) classes sent him home with both overalls. Tyler Pantley in the 65 (7-9) class left no doors open for his competition. Sealing the deal early in both motos he would walk away with the overall for this class and a boat load of confidence heading into the following rounds.

The A and Pro classes this weekend were fun filled and exciting. Lucus Crespi's mechanical malfunction in moto one of the 250 Pro set himself up for a hard get off down the straight away. A moto which we did not see him finish.

In the Open A and Open Pro classes, Ricky Renner was the heavy hitter out front. Like last weekend, it was a fight for the remaining positions on the track. Derek Hall finished a respective second to Ian Millett in third, and those are results from the Open A class. In the Open pro class it was Josh Spires who edged out Tyler Livesay for second overall. Livesay may not have performed as well as he had hoped in this Open class, but he did prove he has the potential to run up front, if he can stay consistent. Livesay was able to seal the overall win from moto one winner, Ricky Renner, in the 250 Pro class.

Last but not least, the 250 A class. After having a tough get off in the 250 Pro class, Crespi was lucky enough to walk away from a crash, due to mechanical issues, that could have been much more severe. Crespi came back to finish out the weekend with a 1-2 and the overall for the 250 A class.

We spotted Tarah Geiger this weekend as she made the trip to Reddick to race with the boys in anticipation of her second MX of Nations race next weekend.

Ian Trettel(far above) and Zach Freeberg (above), both formally on the injured list, were wandering the pits. Both riders seemed to be almost 100% healed and hope to be back racing soon.

That's a wrap for Round 2, stay logged on next week as we bring you coverage from Round 3 at Dade City MX, where we expect to see Adam Cianciarulo appear for his first round of the season.
