It’s not that we ever doubted Christian Craig’s natural ability on the bike, but after pulling out of Vegas for a few motos and showing little enthusiasm for the sport, we weren’t quite sure how much he really wanted it. But oh how things change. Craig showed his talent and speed last week at the Winter National Olympics, but perhaps more importantly, he showed his heart.
It’s no secret that the motocross industry is in dire straights right now. With Honda and now Suzuki discontinuing their amateur support programs (more on all this later) and numerous pro teams bowing out due to lack of funding, finding a ride is becoming more and more of a challenge everyday. There is no time for lackluster attitudes and poor results. If you don’t like the pressure, then go get a real job. It’s time for those who want it to go out and take it. The way we see it the top 2% of the pro class will receive a legitimate ride next season while the rest will struggle to make it as privateers. The New Year will be a game of survival for both the industry and riders alike.
Given that Justin Barcia is the only rider we know of that has a definite ride for next season, that leaves the rest of the field in a scurry to show what they are capable of before their big debut at Unadilla. Craig is amongst the top of that list, but will need to really prove himself in Texas. It’s going to be an interesting year, and no matter what the cost, we’ll be there every step of the way.
Enter Christian Craig:
Christian, you put in a strong showing at Mini O's last week. How does this boost your confidence going into the 2009 season in the A class?
Mini O's was really good! It boosted my confidence a lot. I think I have the speed; I just need to train hard.
What are your plans for 2009?
I plan on racing Oak Hill, Whitney, World Mini, Mammoth, and Loretta's in 2009.
Who do you think will be your toughest competition throughout the 2009 season?
Everybody is tough competition, but definitely Justin Barcia!
Do you think you have what it takes to be the guy who can beat Barcia? He seems to have the most hype this year in the A class.
Yeah, I think I can beat him. I have the speed for sure!
When do you anticipate your move up to the big show?
I will debut at Unadilla in 2009.
Do you have anything signed for 2009?
As an amateur I will remain with Yamaha and all of my sponsors from 2008, although I have signed with Dr. D.
Will you have a ride for the outdoors, or will you compete as a privateer?
I am still working on getting a ride right now, but hopefully everything will work out to where I get a ride.
Well, we wish you the best of luck. Take this time to thanks all of your sponsors.
I'd like to thank my Mom and Dad, Jeremy Maul, DRD, Monster, Fly, Oakley, One Industries, Maxima, Dunlop, and EVS.
