Number Check: Michael Hall
After making his supercross debut this year on the West Coast, Michael Hall has not produced the results the he knows he is capable of. After the first two rounds, Hall was not able to line up on the gate for the main event. Anaheim Two would be a different story. Michael struggled throughout practice, but he put his head down and focused on his races. After having a week off, and putting in tons of practice starts, Michael shot out of the gate and lead everyone into the first turn in his heat. Hall would wind up finishing 5th in his heat race, earning himself a gate for the main event.
1. Michael, after not making it to the main event at Anaheim One or Phoenix, what was going through your mind throughout the week?
I was pretty bummed! I knew that I had the speed and the potential to be in the main and to be doing good in it, but I didn’t let it bother me to the point of giving up, and I let it motivate me.
2. Before the supercross season started, you landed yourself with a deal with Star Racing Yamaha, how does that help with your racing program, and your confidence?
It’s been a huge help to be on a team like Star. It’s a great group of guys and I work really well with everyone.
3. Racing professional supercross was most likely something that you have dreamed about doing since you can remember, right? Would you say that nerves might have been a factor of why you didn't qualify for the first two main events?
I actually didn’t let the nerves get to me, at Anaheim One, I didn’t get good starts which held me back, and at Phoenix I got the holeshot and was leading before the incident with Canard, so it was a couple of unfortunate events.
4. You knew you had to get yourself into the main event. Did you feel that you were capable of making that happen, and maybe the first two rounds you just had a little bit of bad luck?
I knew I was more than capable of making it into the main. All I needed to do was put everything together and stay out of trouble.
5. It seems as if your year had not been starting off the way you had planned. Was there anything within your program that you changed between Anaheim One and Anaheim Two?
Between Anaheim One and Phoenix I really worked on my starts. Since then, in each of my heat races I’ve led everyone through the first turn.
6. Anaheim Two was a whole different story for you. Did you know after practice that you were going to make it happen that night? Could you just tell within yourself that "tonight would be the night?"
I actually struggled in practice at Anaheim Two, but I kept my head up and knew that racing was a different story. I went out and pulled the holeshot in the heat and rode a smart race.
7. You seemed like a more matured Michael Hall. You put your head down, you knew exactly what you had to do, and you made it happen. What was it like to be racing in your first ever Lites Main Event?
It was a dream come true ever since I went to my first supercross to watch! It was all I ever wanted to do, so it was definitely one of the most exciting things I’ve ever done.
8. You put in a solid showing in the main event. You finished ninth in your first ever supercross main event. Is this where you feel that you should be every weekend, consistently?
Yeah, it was a good showing, but I want to improve. I want to get better, and be a threat to win races.
9. From this point forward into your rookie season, what are you expecting of yourself?
I want to keep moving forward, get more experience and stay healthy.
10. Can you already say that your rookie season has been a huge learning experience? Explain some of the differences from amateur racing to racing professional supercross.
It has been a pretty big learning curve, and the biggest thing is the start! It’s a lot harder to come from behind now rather than at an amateur event.
11. We wish you the best of luck throughout the rest of the season. One last question for you, are you having fun yet!?
I’m having a blast!
