Terrence Yarbrough caught our eye after winning his first moto of the week at the 37th Annual World Mini Grand Prix. He caught it even more when he won his second and third moto. A humble kid from Colorado, Terrence opened a lot of eyes in Las Vegas last week. Some ill timed luck in the mains kept Terrence from competing for a title, but he proved something more important...that he's got the talent to do so.
Terrence has recently started working with former five-time Arenacross champion Buddy Antunez and it shows. His confidence on and off the track have skyrocketed and he looks better on the bike than we've ever seen him look. Terrence may not have won a title in Las Vegas, but it's a long year and he's only getting better.
What is the story behind your number?
I started as 427 because I liked it, there is no real story behind it. At the World Mini in 2006 I had to choose between 42 or 27, I liked 27 so I have run it ever since.
How did you get into the sport?
My dad raced snowcross and then he got into moto. He bought me PW 50 and I began racing locally about a year after getting the bike.
What was your first national and how did go?
My first big amateur national was at Ponca in 2004 on 60s. I made all my mains, I finished 24th and 30th.
Who's been your biggest inspiration in moto and why?
Ricky Carmichael; he has a lot heart, he's a great racer, I like how clean he rides and I have looked up to him for a long time now.
What is your greatest memory to date from the amateur nationals?
Making it to Loretta's on my first attempt. It was in Texas at Cycle Ranch and it was pouring rain. I got a holeshot then dropped back to third and on the last lap I stalled my bike with only a few corners to go. I couldn't get it started so I pushed it down a hill and bump stared it and still finished third. I had to finish third to get in Loretta's. My heart was pumping so hard, I was really excited.
Tell us about your daily program?
I'm home schooled, so I do my homework form 9 to 12 and then I road bike for 45 minutes. After that I do a ton of sit ups and push ups and then I go riding from 3 to 6. I have recently started to work with Buddy Antunez and he is helping me a lot. My corners and technique are getting better and it showed at the World Mini.
Sum up the 2008 World Mini?
I won my first three motos and then my top end went out during the 4th moto. I went into the 7-11 Mod main with a 1 and then I went down in second corner. I came back from dead last to finish 6th and that gave me a 5th overall. I was disappointed because I wanted to fight for a title, but riding back to sixth showed a lot of heart. I rode as hard as I could, that's all I could do and I'm proud of my finish.
What's next for you?
I will head to my area qualifier in Moriarty, New Mexico on May 3rd and then begin focusing on Ponca and Loretta's.
Any interests outside of moto?
I play a lot of golf, ride BMX, fish, and love to play football. My team is the Chargers!
I want to thank all of my sponsors, the Tomac family, Buddy Antunez, and my entire family for helping me to achieve my goals in motocross.
