In my 15 years riding a dirt bike—and living in a place that is more conducive to ice fishing than motoing in the winter—I’ve had my fair share of off-time. It wasn’t until this abnormally cold and snowy season, though, that a piece of wisdom like that came into focus for me. Sure, I’ve always loved riding and racing during the summer, but until this year, I hadn’t grasped the magnitude of the friendships that had been forged during those days at the track. Now that all those times have come to stand-still, I find myself anxiously waiting, salivating even, for them to return.
As with most things in life, the race season in the northern states will indeed return more quickly than we expect. The wide array of family-friends, riding buddies, industry types and even rivals will re-immerge and I think I’ll take a second to appreciate them, because as the saying goes, I didn’t know how much I loved them until they were gone.
