Onto the sweepers…
I went to my daughter’s school the other day to take part in her field trip to the pumpkin patch. I rolled into a classroom filled with wide eyed kids excited for the trip and was greeted by mine, who had her mind on other things.
Ella came running up to me and wrapped a big hug around my legs and stared me down as she asked, “Dad can we go riding after school?” It took me a minute to answer her, simply because I was overcome. With every passing day, Ella seems to become more and more obsessed with racing moto. We have spent a lot of time over the summer practicing on the backyard track and recently we have started packing it up and heading out to the local practice tracks.
It is hard to recognize within Ella’s personal manner, but within her lays a competitive side, a side that understands strategy, fundamentals, goals, and the qualifying process for Loretta’s. Although Ella is only five years old and still months away from her debut race here in New Mexico, she encompasses something that makes me believe I’m going spend a lot of money on gas in the coming years.
She comes into my home office every night wanting to watch PW videos on You Tube and yesterday she told me that she liked my Day in the Dirt movie, but the bikes are kind of funny looking like street bikes. This to me is the good stuff that builds those precious memories through fatherhood.
I have listened to her critique riders on this very website for dropped elbows. I had the pleasure of her telling me that she understands that racing Loretta’s is all about having fun, but if she does happen to win then she is going to give the trophy to her dad. The combination of maturity mixed with the purity of such a young spirit and desire to explore a shared passion is something that Ella is giving to me. In return, I promise to support her every desire and make the journey as fun as possible.
This week we started working on sweepers, starts, and bouncing through the bumps. As I tuck her into bed every night, she asks question after question about moto and I simply can't get enough. I’m writing this blog because this is what it is all about. It is the fun in motocross that has pulled each and every one of us in, and as with anything, it is within the learning curve in which you will truly enjoy it the most.
Below you will find a list of You Tube links that Ella and I visit at about 7:00 PM every evening…
