BACK TO SCHOOL
Summer flies by like a metaphor every year and it seems that there is less time to vacation once the RV and trailer are cleaned up after Loretta Lynn's Amateur National. I am reminded of what I thought was a very funny commercial several years ago of a Dad shopping in K-Mart singing; "It's the most wonderful time of the year...", as his kid sits in the cart with a big frown at the very thought of going back to school.
I have come along way since then, especially after my husband Don informed me that we would need to start homeschooling our two children 9 years ago. I was not the man singing in the commercial when I realized that my husband was being insightful. In fact, I was concerned at the thought of home schooling even though I am a certified and experienced teacher. At the time, homeschooling had a pretty bad stigmatism associated with the idea and finding any kind of program offering support was an impossibility.
Never say never, I soon learned that an opportunity was staring me straight in the face. I would be able to provide support to families such as ours who travel together in pursuit of becoming the best they can be on the track as well as the best student off the track without compromising their grades because of attendance issues in a non-traditional sport.
There are many options when considering the decision to educate your children in a non-traditional setting. I am honored when parents contact me for information, guidance, and support and still I realize that it is what is best for each family that matters the most.
This week a father contacted me and I thoroughly enjoyed our conversation. He had a serious racer with great potential, more time on the track would really help him to be more competitive. I could tell that this Dad was on the right path and I was happy that he called me for advice. We agreed we would talk again next year and that some of the best lessons we all learn we learn in Kindergarten.
